Waste Management

During the years 2009/2010 we carried out a comprehensive waste audit to help make our hotel more environmentally friendly. That audit allowed us to quantify the various waste products we have and endeavour to find recycling partners to help us towards our eventual aim of having zero landfill.
Since the 2009 audit things have moved on rapidly and in June of this year(2012) we achieved our aim of having zero landfill for our month’s waste collection.

We are now in a position to recycle all waste products from the hotel with the main items listed below:

Glass

Cardboard

Cooking oil

Paper

Aluminium

Plastic

Printer ink

Uncooked kitchen waste(for composting)
Cooked food waste

Hazardous waste including electrical goods, paints, batteries, excess furnishings etc. are stored separately and collected when required.

Recycling of Organic Matter and uncooked kitchen waste:

All uncooked kitchen waste is collected and transported to our own composting bins situated in the herb and vegetable garden. The waste is mixed with grass cuttings, leaves and other organic material to produce top class compost over a period of several months. Worms are used to breakdown the material and it is turned once during the process. We have significant capacity in these bins so we can comfortably handle the large volume of waste.
In April of 2012 we joined with Core Waste services to remove all food waste from our general bins. As well as complying with and indeed, being ahead of future government regulations removing the food waste to a separate container has made the general waste bins cleaner and easier to handle.
All waste materials are now rated against our guest numbers to allow us to keep up the pressure to reduce, re-use and recycle.
