Atholl Palace attends World Travel Market

Atholl Palace Hotel Continues Its Renovation and Expansion in Its Bid to Remain One of Scotland’s Ultimate Destination Hotspots

The Scottish Baronial Castle overlooking the stunning surrounding Highlands is located in the picturesque Victorian Town of Pitlochry, Central Scotland. Situated only an hour’s drive away from Edinburgh Airport and on the main London to Inverness rail route; the impressive hotel is currently midway through an extensive programme which has seen its product diversify with room refurbishments, luxury lodges already newly opened & garden apartments currently set to be finished in early 2010. The hotel came under new ownership in 2001, who felt that whilst the building and grounds were truly breathtaking, the hotel was in need of modernisation and upgrading to remain a key competitor in the market. With careful consideration of the hotel’s unique history, having stood for nearly 130 years and originally built as a Hydropathic establishment then later converted into a hotel, the owners have restored many of the original features and character to their former grandeur whilst still offering all of the modern conveniences for both the leisure and business market. With 48 acres of land the hotel has been able to increase its product offerings with the conversions of period buildings such as the old Gatehouse, which has original features such as a spiral staircase and turrets, and the Gardener’s Cottage. New purpose-built lodges have also been developed which have their own garden and outdoor eating areas. The hotel itself has also been under construction with the development of self-contained garden apartments which will offer both the luxury of the hotel surroundings with unique private living spaces for those who do not want to compromise quality and service. The grounds have also been developed with the addition of the Japanese Zen Garden complete with a pagoda and babbling brook. Recreating the glorious gardens that were part of the original vision for the Atholl Palace has been an integral part of the work carried out on the hotel in recent years. Hard work and imaginative planting has been rewarded with several prizes from the Pitlochry in Bloom Competition over the last three consecutive years. The gardens have been developed with walkways and seats to encourage all, both hotel guests and day visitors, to relax and enjoy the abundant wildlife. The remarkable specimen trees, planted as the hotel was being built from 1874, have been described as "an undiscovered arboretum", and are part of Perthshire's Big Tree Country. The grounds also boast their own tennis courts, putting green golf courses and outdoor pool. The ethos behind such a wide range of activities and stunning grounds is to allow guests to feel that whilst they may wish to pay a visit other parts of the Scottish Central Highlands, they also have many leisure options within the hotel itself. Attending the World Travel Market for the first time this year as an exhibitor is a continuing step for the Atholl Palace Hotel as they increase their profile within new markets in Europe and indeed Worldwide. As the business continues to grow, so too does the hotel itself. With future plans for further self-catering apartments and the continuing refurbishment of the hotel’s 106 rooms there is no doubt that the Atholl Palace is enjoying an exciting time of development which they wish to showcase in 2009 and in years to come.

After the driest spring and summer for a long time it did rain, eventually. During mid to late July we had some days of exceptionally heavy rain which did some damage but also an enormous amount of good. The ground needed the moisture and grass and other quick growing plants(weeds!) responded within days. Trees and larger shrubs will take longer to respond but it is comforting to know that most of the plants have survived the drought and will be replenishing their reserves by the day. Most satisfyingly the hypericum bank in the Japanese Garden, which almost died during the cold winter then again due to the drought, has rallied and although the plants probably won’t flower this year they are alive and recovering well.
